I'm form "the other" much less known Methodist church, the Free Methodist Church. I liked the rethink campaign, thought it was well done; it didn't really help any of the churches whose pastors I know personally. I am also a church planter, so I naturally agree with the thought of putting more into planting new churches :) I believe that those new churches would connect many more new Christ followers than the ads will. Nice article, Craig.

Amazing new things are being done w/ television in the majority world church. We recently did a 'home' outreach where we broadcast-ed our children's HopeGiver film on national television in 14 languages and then families invited neighbor children into their houses to watch, followup w/ contextualized scripture books to accompany the movie and invitations to discipleship classes. The equivalent of Indian Nielsens had a viewership of over 400 million, we had 13 million attend the home showings. Innovative media missions is the way to go...

Great post Bobbie. We just finished discovery research among urban Indian youth in several mega-cities, very interesting! The 320 million emerging middle class Indian urbanites are primed for a relevant and contextualized faith experience. Would love to have you out for one of our India Transformation Movement gatherings with leading young professionals and pastors re-imagining Church in the 21st century...

Not that I have a particular problem with exploring new ways to reach people, but what are these "conventional methods" that you're moving on from to reach them?

I hope it is not a substitution of a local church for a viral one...

I for one think this campaign is good. I perceive in it a focus on social causes, with the denominational "plug" kept in the background. What I particularly like is the way that it addresses venues attended by people who appreciate noble causes (e.g., NPR & National Geographic). Also, I find it interesting that the lectionary for this week includes John 12:1-8, in which Judas asks "Why was this perfume not sold and the money given to the poor?" Yes, the UMC spent $20M on "advertizing". But how much does it give to various needs throughout the world? In 2008, UMCOR alone provided $93.3M in relief aid. Throw in other organizations the UMC supports (e.g., Society of St. Andrews), and the direct aid provided by local churches, and I suspect the number would be rather large.

I've been part of two of these experiences for the last month or so and it has been an unbelievable blessing to have such a connection with people all over the world. It blows my mind sometimes to see conversations taking place and lives being ministered to across continents while we all take part in the online experience. This really is something that you have to experience before you begin to wrap your mind around the amazing potential that exists in using online experiences to share the Gospel.

We also practice the christian love and mercy by caring 45 needy orphan children who need help.
We pray that through God's Holy Spirit at work, that you shall
appreciate our interest and desire that we might find a definite spiritual
partnership with your church ministry.

Unbelievable. But don't you think we have a lot of work to do to repair the image of the 'tele evangelist'?

I am by no means suggesting that that's what lifechurch or any other church would be doing, but that bridge has been burned so many times by vultures preying on the weak.

There is great potential with media and the future seems limitless. This would be a great tool and I look forward to seeing how the church uses it to reach the lost!

Great thoughts!

I just returned from Kenya with Compassion International where I had the chance to tour various slums around Nairobi. I was surprised to learn that most of the population in the slums had access to some form of television despite their extreme poverty.

I asked those who had been doing outreach for years in the slums how TV was changing the impoverished. The answers were all the same, quick, and simple:

Television is making those in extreme poverty significantly more discontent.

The explanation behind that statement was that before television people know that they had a rough life, but it isn't until they see the images on television that they realize how severely disadvantaged they are.

Nevertheless, the people continue to consistently watch television almost every night, proving that it's a medium with unquestionable potential to spread the gospel to the poorest of the poor.

Hey Bobby,
Thanks for the review. Looking forward to reading Craig's book. The 40 second video above really lays it out doesn't it!?! The fear of God is something we just don't live or believe in any more.
Blessings,

Morning,

As a church we currently use a balanced scorecard, that includes some tangibles but many measures are intangible. At the start of each year the core leaders determine what sucess would look like and then provide a monthly account of how they feel that is progressing. This is presented at a monthly leaders meeting where views can be challenged and leaders held accountable to one another. This maybe easier as we are still fairly small (but growing quickly for the UK!) and most people are volunteers not staff. But this approach has really helped in ensuring that we are progressing forwards in all areas not just those that are easier to measure.

Love to hear more though about how largely churches tackle these issues.
