Ten Questions Every Leader Should Ask

During this series, we’ll look at ten questions each leader should ask in several different areas of life.

Today we’ll examine some questions that surround our Relationship with Christ.

  1. What did I learn in God’s word this week?
  2. Is my burden for prayer growing or diminishing?
  3. Does my heart break for the things that break the heart of God?
  4. Have I grown accustomed to or accepted sin in my life?
  5. Am I doing ministry out of an overflow of God’s work in my heart or out of my own strength?
  6. Has my teaching and ministry deepened, changed, or evolved in a positive way in the last year?
  7. Do I have a sincere peace that I’m living an authentic life of spiritual integrity?
  8. Is my heart growing larger for people and God or is it shrinking?
  9. Am I closer to God today than I was a year ago?
  10. Do others comment that they can clearly see evidence of God’s work in my life?

Which of these resonate with you? What else would you ask?

“5″ hits me between the eyes. It is so easy to get caught up in the day to day activities that my dependency on God goes down. Thanks for the great questions.

Lucky number “7″ is mine! I seek authenticity…peace and integrity! GREAT questions Craig! I would add…How far am I willing to go? How many steps would I take out of the boat and onto the water without “freaking out” if God called me? OR Am I really up to the challenge or do I really want it?

Great questions…. #3 Continue to break my heart more and more.

#8 is my heart growing for people or shrinking?

Lately, I would have to admit that it’s shrinking… what are some things you have done to make sure this doesn’t happen?

I find that my patience with people’s issues, problems, complaints, and attitudes is wearing thin…

#3. It’s to easy to look the other way sometimes and ignore the thigns that break His heart.

  6. Mar 31, 2008 at 6:58 am

#2 concerns me. I get so stinking busy - and run in a million directions instead of being still and talking with my Father and more importantly hearing Him. I so want a greater prayer life.

  7. Mar 31, 2008 at 7:10 am

I move in and out of #2. It really distubs me when I realize that I’m not praying as much. I can tell a genuine difference in my life when I lose that edge. Thanks for the wake-up call.

#5 is something I have wrestled with for most of my ministry. It is so easy to fall into the trap of doing ministry in our own ability. I have made it an issue of accountability that I be asked if I am ministering out of my overflow. Ministry is so much more satisfying when my cup is running over.

Gotta be #1. I have been so wrapped up in the business and that is the first thing to be neglected. I am off to find a quiet spot.

This is excellent. I just printed out the questions to carry with me in my Bible.

Thanks for continually pushing others forward in their ministry and their walk with the Lord. You guys are such a blessing!

Great start to the week, Craig!

Number 1 really resonates with me; there is so much in Scripture and I should be able to glean something new every week.

Number 7 is appropriately convicting; would I mind if others were able to watch a “hidden” video of my day-to-day, or see the true state of my heart?

    One question I would add:

Do I have an appreciation that this world is not our home? Do I recognize that the 80 or so years on this Earth are extremely minute compared to the “not yet” for which I should be living and preparing?

#7 is one I would ask myself every morning and evening. I’m really convicted this morning about that being a question I don’t ever want to answer with anything less than a resounding yes!

I have a yellow post-it permanently on my monitor to remind me about #5. It’s an Erwin McManus quote:

    “Are you rowing or sailing?”

I think 2 is a challenge for me too.

    C,

These are all great questions. I think the one that resonates with me the most is probably a combination of #7 & #10. I say that not because I want people to tell me or to pat me on the back. But because I feel so strongly about “leaving a legacy” behind. I wrote in my blog over the weekend about Leadership’s #1 Quality- Integrity. I want more than anything than to be “seen and known” as a man/pastor of integrity. Whether now as I live or when I am gone, I want that to be my legacy…to my wife, my children, my friends (unsaved and Christ-followers) and the church(es) I pastor.

I look forward to the rest of the week’s questions.

#1 I need to ask myself this question more often, thanks Craig
    What else would you ask?
In what ways spiritually am I being stretched passed my comfort level?

You know like the first time you jumped off the high dive…That question you had in your mind… Can I really do this?

  22. Apr 1, 2008 at 12:03 am

It makes you realize that the real battle is on the inside not on the outside.

#7 hits me hard. I usually feel pretty inadequate, and a sincere peace within seems just out of reach most of the time.

I think this is a great list of questions that seek the heart of the leader not the personality of the leader. Too often as a leader we are wrapped up in the questions that drive our organizations and not int he questions that should drive our heart and passion.

Thanks for sharing these with us.

#4 Have I grown accustomed to or accepted sin in my life?
This gives me a seed that God can give me help with regarding the sin in my life. :) Great Question! Thank you!!

Thinking, a question I ask myself….keeping in mind that my leadership is more one on one than anything else. But, I do ask myself sometimes; “Why is it that I continue to revisit certain lessons? Could it be that I am missing something? or is it the individual who I’m showing has not ’seen it’ yet?

Heart issues are always the toughest. Really figuring out motives for ministry. Is it the outflow of a heart for God or recognition, position or other? Thanks for holding us accountable. I forwarded this out to a handful of pastor friends.again thanks.
