I’m Curious: Mobile/Cell Phones

I’d like to take another quick informal survey.

I’m curious…for everyone that has a mobile/cell phone, how have you used your phone in the last 30 days? (phone calls, texting/sms, email, web browsing, instant messaging, listening to music, watching videos, or something else?) What do you use it for the most? And the bonus question…How many hours a day would you guess that you use it?

Thanks for your help again.

Palm Treo 755 P. I use it more for internet than phone. I don’t really like talking on the phone very much. I browse sites like yours & post some like I am now. I get e-mail notifications of post on my blog via my Treo & can respond no matter where I am. How many hours… :)

Use my iPhone for pretty much everything but making coffee - leave that to the experts at Starbucks.

Calendar/Appointments, email, entertainment (you tube, podcasts, music, video) web browsing, weather, stocks, texts, calls, camera for family photo albums and blogs.posting… just wish it had a project management tool.

Phone usage around 1500min/mo and a about 30 min/day on the web side of things.

  5. Oct 3, 2007 at 8:13 am

Just the basics. Phone calls, and last week I finally got text message capabilities.

Then again, the company pays for it, so I’m not too picky.

I have a basic little cell phone that I use for phone calls, text messaging, taking pictures, telling the time, calendaring, and balancing my checkbook (using the calculator - the phone itself doesn’t balance my checkbook but maybe I should patent that software …).

Less frequently used functions include flashlight, paperweight, doorstop, and alarm clock.

  7. Oct 3, 2007 at 8:35 am

Oh, and I probably use it 90 minutes/day.

    Palm Treo:

    phone calls
    calendar
    text messages
    camera
    note pad or memos

I have a 3500 min a month plan. I use most of those. I do not have a home phone line, so this doubles as a work and home phone.

I use it mostly for calls, but I get a lot of SMS notifications.
I use it probably less than 1 hour per day.

    I have the Motorola Q.

Phone calls. Muga texts. Mobile blogging. Camera. Video. Email. Internet. Calendar. Read blogs.

I don’t know how many hours. I feel like I’m constantly checking email, blogs, Internet. If I go 15 to 30 minutes without using it, I get the shakes from withdrawl.

Hmmm, I guess it would take owning a smarter phone than the one that I have to compete with most of you. Plus, my phone is getting old and the speaker doesn’t work well so I pretty much dislike talking to people on it. But here’s the list…

    Talking - Approx 1 hr/day
    Txt - Main communication tool
    Update Twitter Account
    Take Pictures of my kid
    Take Videos of my kid
Use the calculator function to stay on budget at the grocery store.

    There ya go…

I use voice mainly. Text a good bit, but not a lot. I find texting can be confusing and its so easy for people to get the wrong message. I don’t use the cell for much else. It isn’t practical for me to use my cell to email, etc. I think I would waste more time than gain with it, and I am almost always around a computer or have my laptop plugged into a wifi spot. When the smart phones get a little better (and smaller) I will jump on board.

Cell use daily: I got my phone 10 months ago and have 255 total hours. So, about .85 hours daily.

I have a razr and I mostly use it for phone calls (it is my only phone), text messaging, web browsing, and monopoly when bored. I use it anywhere from 30 min to 4 or 5 hours a day.

    Text - About 250/month

    Photos/Video - only when I see something worthwhile :)

I do not have a home phone so my cell is used for both work and personal.
I try and keep texts to a minimum but also use it for pictures.
I have 1450 minutes and consistently use almost all (my husband only uses a few of those). In addition, I have free mobile to mobile and my circle that are NOT figured into that, which are actually my most used numbers.

  29. Oct 3, 2007 at 11:38 am

    Voice - Average of 1 hr./day

    Text - 10/month

    Calendar/Contacts - daily

I use my iPhone for everything! It is such a blessing!

internet, texting, phone, iPod, youTube, calendar, contacts, weather, directions, calculator, world clock, stocks, camera, email, purchase music, notebook, and more!

i can finally leave my laptop behind on various appointments and out of office connections.

it’s definitely one of those devices that you can truly say, “I don’t know what I did without it!!”

I have a cell phone that has a bunch of features I don’t use. I’m still stuck in the 20th century because, silly me, I use my phone to call people. I would say probably a couple hours a day.

  32. Oct 3, 2007 at 1:15 pm

I use my phone for phone calls and as my alarm clock for all things (waking up or cooking).

I occasionally text message, but currently it’s a less effective communinication tool for me that it was even 2 years ago.

In reality, in my current season of life, I probably only use my phone 20 minutes a day on average.

  33. Oct 3, 2007 at 1:57 pm

I have a Samsung T519 on a T-mobile MyFaves Friends and Family plan. Our family of 3 barely uses our 700 minutes (but we talk a lot more to our MyFaves friends. Maybe 2000 minutes a month for the 3 of us. I make 3-4 phone calls a day. I hate talking on the phone. I text (SMS) 3-4 times a day - mostly to family. My daughter on the other hand is 17 and texts (SMS) about 100 times a day or so. Good thing we have unlimited texting. My phone plays music but I dont use it for that - and takes videos and pictures. I use the camera a lot to take random pictures.

The best use of the camera is when I go to home depot and want to by 1 or two screws and they need the part number to ring me up at the register because they arent priced individually. Instead of writing it down on a piece of paper I take a picture of the part number and price and show that to the cashier. They think its pretty innovative :-)

We don’t even have a landline phone, so our family is completely reliant on our cell phones. We basically only use them for phone conversations, though. (I’ll occasionally use the camera to take a picture of my little boy.) I’m probably on the phone 30-60 minutes a day between personal and church calls.

    Here goes:
    phone calls
    text
    email
    contacts
    calendar
    todo list
    alarm clock
    camera and video
    surfing
    sermon notes, sometimes preaching outlines
Powerpoint for 1 on 1 meetings
Movies (VeggieTales for the kids keeps flights smooth)
    music
    Skype
    google maps
    t-v remote
    guitar tuner

For me, it has become my Swiss Army knife of sorts. Only a tool though.

I live and die by my Crackberry Curve…

    Phone - 2 hours a day
    Text - about 200 a month
Email - too embarrassed to admit my addictions…

My new favorite use for the phone is googling for directions and phone numbers (466453) - http://www.google.com/intl/en_us/mobile/sms/

normal phone functions, texting, and a lot of alarm/clock usage. From time to time I use the calculator. And when I am really bored, I’ll play games on it. I use about 1000 minutes a month, and almost never use a land line.

    Big Chris

  48. Oct 4, 2007 at 9:52 am

I’m very office centered, so I use my landline more than anything…and I drive a motorcycle…which doesn’t lend itself to chatting on the road…so I’ll be a weirdo out of the group.
I talk on the cell phone from 2-3 hours a week.

  49. Oct 4, 2007 at 11:20 am

As an Internet Developer \ Designer I’m a little torn on the use of gadgets. When the iPhone was released I wrote a little about the thoughts I have here: http://www.brandonrichards.com/journal/entry/apple_iphone_meets_idol/

How to balance becoming enslaved to a device, (you know that leash feeling you have when someone from work calls to talk business when you’re trying to give your kids a bath or when you’re asleep) and making the device a productive tool.

I was once lost, but now I’m found through GPS.
I see a number of skits for this. Imagine the Last Supper. And instead of everyone talking, sharing leaning against Jesus, everyone is SMS’ing the other one.

    “He who texts after me…”

Is this really the right direction?

I just came back from Adobe MAX in Chicago and it was ‘assumed’ and has become a necessity to almost everyone to be ‘IN’ as Verizon has declared. After all, everyone wants to be included.

Ah too much of a response, sorry.

I only have a pay as you go mobile right now that I use occasionally. I often get dumbfounded looks when I tell people I don’t do mobile, I have a life and prefer to keep it. I will confess I did have a Verizon Wireless a year ago when I moved to Dallas, but it was mainly for GPS.

I use my mobile maybe 2-3 times a month, briefly.

bonus question…how many hours a day would you guess that you use it?

  54. Oct 8, 2007 at 6:04 pm

I use mine for checking e-mail most. I screen my calls, and determine if they can wait to be called back from a landline.
