NYC and Seth recap
Should we avoid the coming snow storm…we will be leaving NYC tomorrow. It’s been a very inspiring and effective visit. I’ve definitely lost my northern blood (grew up in Illinois)…it is very cold walking down the streets of NYC.
We spent most of today with Seth Godin in a small seminar/consulting format with a handful of other companies. We were asked to not blog on the specifics and details of the other companies without permission (which I unfortunately did not get), but I will share some general things about the day. Thank you to all of you who submitted questions on the blog or via email…I’ll respond to you directly.
- There were some very interesting technology start-ups, marketing firms, and retail companies present.
- Seth, in his typical direct style, challenged us all to create remarkable products/services and simply to quit doing the things that are not worth talking about or sharing with others. We are all a needle in a haystack and no one will find us if we don’t do something worth talking about.
- We also looked at several websites to evaluate their effectiveness. A very simple rule of thumb…look at your site. What do you really want people to do when they come to your site? What outcome do you hope happens? Does your site reflect that priority or not? (note that I said simple, but sometimes we miss the obvious) Why do we usually display the same site to all users when it is essentially free to display different pages to users based on whether the user is new, where they are located (geographically) or what site they were referred from, etc?
So…what are the things that LCTV is doing that compels our people to share it with others? What are the things that we do that aren’t remarkable? Those are the questions we are discussing. I plan on sharing some take aways, but we will need to process what we learned with the rest of our team and develop an action plan over the next week or so first.
Here are a couple of pics from our trip. If you have not visited the new apple store in NYC - you must do so.

Visit

Great to hear, Bobby! It’s always enjoyable listening to Seth. Safe travels back home. I’ll see you in San Diego at the SNS FiRe conference. Should be a great time! :)
ps: Love the pics!
Hey Bobby… I’m impressed with how you’ve kept pressing in and chased the vision you shared when I met you 4 years ago. Remember the Internet Visionary Roundtable in Chicago?? I’ve been keeping up with the stuff you & your team are doing. It’s inspiring. I’m also proud of your team’s ability to model humility and servant leadership. Great job. On another note… how in the world did you get the attention of Seth Godin. I’ve been attempting to connect w/ him recently and the door hasn’t opened. You’re the man…
Kem,
I remember the roundtable. A lot has changed since then for both of our churches. I hope we’ll have an opportunity to connect in the future again.
I’ll email you soon.
Hi Bobby and Craig,
I really like the blog. Seth’s got some great insights.
I’m about to step into leading a communications team at a large church here is Australia and have been doing a recon of all the major influencers around the world that I can find.
I really like your open source… wow! very challenging for me. I had previously planned the more traditional ‘pay per use’ model for our resources, but you are challenging me to rethink this.
Couple of questions…
1) How can you afford it? Do you allocate new budgets to make it happen or take some from existing budgets?
2) Is there any more info you have that would help me do something similar for our church here (we currently influence hundreds of churches here in Australia - and its growing)
Hope you get to read this!
Steve
